Sound volume is VERY LOW on the Spectron models
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
If you buy this you better use close caption as the volume is so low that it is hard to hear an AC/DC concert disc. I tested other Protron / Spectron models and they were all like that including the PDV-808. BUYER BEWARE !

Poorly Made / Very low volume

I bought a Protron / Spectron unit at my local Toys R Us store and thought it would be a good idea to use on a family journey to Disney World. I thought it would keep the kids quiet on our long journey but boy was I wrong. All the kids keep saying was daddy turn it up ! The volume was up all the way but it was barely a whisper plus you could hear the chattering of the unit and all times. Very light and cheap. I wish I would have read other reviews on this product before I purchased one. I did take it back with no problems after our trip but learned a lesson. Stay away from this brand and save your self a real headache.

A great buy if you use it like I did

I bought this player for $69 which includes a car case which straps on the back of a car seat, 2 earphones, earphone splitter, ac/dc power cords and several patch cords. While the picture is excellent the sound was so lousy that I almost returned it to hhgregg. Since I bought this unit to entertain kids on a road trip I decided to consider external speakers. My search took me to Walmart where I stumbled upon a $9.00 cassette which allows me to play the sound through my car cassette/cd stereo. I just watched “Jumanji” in my van and the sound was fantastic and almost as good as my 5.1 surround home system. If you want better sound in your home you can run the sound though your home stereo or buy some cheap powered external speakers that work with a Walkman or laptop. For $69 I couldn’t be happier!

    Shamefully Poor Sound
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I paid $99 through HSN. It came with battery, two sets of earplugs, an earphone splitter for two sets of ears, various cables, including a car adapter and AC/DC charger, remote and a free heavy-duty carrying case. I thought I was getting a great deal.

The picture is fantastic. Sharp and clear. The battery was sufficient for a two+ hour movie.

The sound, however, stinks. Even with the volume turned all the way up, the sound comes out as a whisper. The earplugs provided made the sound louder, but they are uncomfortable, button-type earplugs. I tried a set of over-the-ear plugs, but the sound didn’t register as well. So, I bought a small set of Sony external speakers at WalMart for $9.99, figuring that would solve the volume problem, but they didn’t help either. The sound barely registered through them, so I’ll have to return those speakers to the store.

I connected the DVD to my computer speakers. The sound came out loud and clear, but it isn’t practical to lug those big speakers around. I bought this DVD player because I wanted portability.

I am puzzled as to where to turn next. I don’t care how great the picture is. If you have to strain to hear the movie what good is a clear picture?

I am more than a bit disappointed with this machine.

No Sound !!! Why sell something like this ?
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I don’t understand how these ever made it to market. They are cheaply made in China and they come with virtually NO SOUND. I am not kidding you. I thought it was a good deal since it came with a carrying case but I sure was wrong.

The only good review you will find on these units is from the poor sellers who bought a bunch of them and are trying to sell them as fast as they can before the word gets out that these players are defective !!!

And try to get Spectron’s customer service to help you! That is a nightmare in itself!

Bought this player 2 years ago when it was called PROTRON.

Got it from Walgreens for $99. It came with a battery, remote control, 2 ear buds, the AC adapter, car adapter, A/V cable and carying case.

We got it for our 1 1/2 year old when we go on road trips and to watch on the deck outside.

It has been through hell over the last 2 years, used EVERY day and even dropped a few of times.

It is finally starting to show some signs of abuse, the display works intermitantly depending on the position its in, but it is still woking.

I have not had the audio problems that others have mentioned.

Glad we got it, would buy it again.

    value for money
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I bought this from Toys R Us a litle more than a year back. I needed a portable DVD player to keep my 18 month old kid occupied with her Blues Clues & Backyardigans DVDs, hence price was a bigger factor than optics or sound quality.

So far, this product has more than met my expectations and has paid for itself several times over on all those occasions when it would preserve our sanity by keeping our toddler occupied. in the car, in a flight and even restaurants!

The picture quality on this DVD player is pretty good, though the same cannot be said about the audio. the remote is also not a easy one to operate and lacks a volume control.

Overall, for the price I paid, I would definitely rate this as a true value for money product

I picked two of these up for 60.00 each. I was nervous but no longer, the sound is FABULOUS, the screen is clear and colorful. I think it was worth EVERY PENNY. What a fantastic deal!

    Surprisingly Good

Yes, this is one of those “no-name brands” that people are always warning you never to buy. I didn’t buy mine, though – received it from a friend as a Christmas gift – and couldn’t be happier with it. For a no-name brand, the picture quality is excellent! Like others have said, the audio isn’t all that loud, but it’s decent enough so that you don’t have to strain to hear on the speakers, and it’s a lot better through earphones.

At first, I had trouble figuring out how to charge the battery pack; I thought it had to be charged while the AC adapter was connected to the player, but finally figured out that the pack is charged alone. After that little mishap, I had no other problems with it. I’m not sure how much my friend paid for it, but it was well worth the price. It came with a lot of neat accessories too!

    Horrible

I bought one of these and it worked well for about a month(if that). Now I can’t use it because everytime it has lines across the screen and it stops working. A piece of junk! Save your money!

    Spectroniq stinks!!
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I bought a Spectroniq dvd player so I could let my kids enjoy their movies both in the car on trips and in the house so there would be less fighting at movie time. Well, it worked “ok” from Nov until today, then it just stopped working. Wouldn’t even turn on. Customer service just told me that there was a 90 day warranty on it and after that I would have to have it checked out by a serviceman. For my money and I hope yours, I will not buy another product from this company.

It was fine, while it worked – Where’s customer service?????
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I got this DVD player during an after Thanksgiving sale for around 60 dollars. I thought it was a great deal for a portable DVD player. We bought it to use on long car trips for the kids to watch movies. I thought it was fine initially, I didn’t really notice any problem with the volume. However, after using it on approx 5 car trips, it will now only work if we use a piece of duct tape to hold the lid down over the DVD. Some sensor went bad and even if the lid is closed it still says it’s open. Some might wonder why I didn’t call customer service for help. Therein lies the main reason I give this product 1 Star — NO CUSTOMER SERVICE. I tried the number in the manual – I get a recording that the number is not in service. I looked up Spectroniq’s website and tried that number also got the same message no service. I will never buy a product by this company again, and I feel really bad for people who bought expensive products from them.

I bought this approx 2 years ago during Black Friday at ToysRUs. It’s terrible! After only 6 months, the battery died so it wasn’t exactly “portable” anymore. The company is a no-name company that’s impossible to contact for replacement parts. The LCD screen flickers on & off. Like other reviews have mentioned, the sound is awful. Now we just plug it into the television in our daughter’s room and sub it as a regular DVD player ~ hoping to get our money’s worth out of it.

Worst thing to ever spend money on!
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
My Dad purchased this item for my daughter. While on a road trip this weekend we noticed a strong smell. It was this DVD player! It is now totally warped and burned inside and out. Save your money; what a disappoinment! And, as other readers said, their is no customer service- the website no longer exists and the phone number is disconnected.
