As the other reviewers note, when it works, it’s a pretty good player. But, the odds that you get one that works over the long haul is probably 50-50. We’ve been through two in less than 2 years. First one had the power supply connector go bad. The second one loss the picture. Not about to buy another one.
poor quality

I bought this player and had some problem with it so they exchanged it for me since it was less than 3 months. Now it does not work at all. They say that if it is more than a year they will replace it for $99. I would rather put a few more dollars and buy some other company DVD player.I will never purchase from Polaroid again!
Does not support burned DVD”s
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
The description on Amazon says it supports both -R and +R but no where in the documentation does it state that it supports these formats. Most of the disks I have are burned copies of scratched originals and none of them play. They all skip and stop after several minutes. Commercial dvd’s seem to work fine. I have had the unit 6 months with no problems with the commercial DVD’s. I am, however very disappointed in the false listing as I can rarely use the player now.
great dvd player for the price

I have had this portable dvd player for around a year now, and i think its great. There are only a few complaints that i have. First, the buttons on the player dont work as well as they could. You have to push them pretty hard for them to work. Before, i thought the color and brightness buttons didnt work, but u just have to press them alot to see a difference. Just the player itself weights 2.5 pounds. The clicker is great, it just dosent have volume buttons on it, so u cant control the volume with the clicker. Great picture. Good sound.

I am now on my second one of these – the first was replaced (for a $50 fee) because the hinge on the screen broke. Now, a year later, guess what, the hinge on the screen is broke (this interupts the wiring and you can’t play DVDs). I called service and their response was, Well, you’ve had it A YEAR! OMG. Since when are DVD Player’s disposable after a year??? I can’t believe that they don’t expect their products to last longer than that. No more Polaroids for me.
Broke after just a few months
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
This player stopped reading discs after just a few months. I thought it was just a bad disc, and we don’t use portable players often (just for long trips) so i didn’t do anything about it, but it’s definitely broken and I am having a hard time getting it repaired. For the price I paid I averaged about $25 for each movie we watched on it before it failed.
Loved it, but broke after a year

My 3 year old used this for hours and hours. We absolutely loved this DVD player. We took it on trips. My 3 year old watched his own movie when we were watching something he didn’t like. Sometimes I’d hook it up and let him watch a movie in his bed before going to sleep. We LOVED how portable, and light and easy it was to use. But only a year and a half after buying it brand new, the display picture went out on it. My Electrical Engineer husband couldn’t even fix it and he can fix anything. We spent $150 and now its broke. I’m not spending that much again on a DVD player. Get a cheaper one.
bought it for my niece

Worked for 6 months. Sister used it only on long trips in the car or airplanes. Broke, now only plays Audio CD’s. Won’t buy another portable again, waste of $$

A relative of mine got me this for Christmas, and I was sooo excited. I watched one movie on it…and the DVD player would turn off and on.
This stopped once I put the player on a flat surface. I’ve had this problem several times since I recieved it, even after I put the player on a flat surface. Today, I was watching a DVD I recieved for my birthday on a car trip.
And the picture froze. We tried everything. Cleaning the lens, the disk, the screen. After my mom had finished cleaning the disk, the player didn’t turn on.
Nothing. It just stopped. No matter how many times we pushed the on and off switch, and no matter how many times we switched the disk, the screen didn’t go on.
I’ve had this for less than a month, and it’s already broken.
broke in 7 months

I also bought this for use in the car. It worked well for 7 months. Now it will not read or play discs of any kind. A call to customer service results in nothing! I’m told these units are “non-repairable” and with a warranty of only 3 months … who can afford this?
Don’t buy it!
good while it lasted

We bought 2 of these about a year ago and have loved them. They’ve been handled by our 7 and 11 year olds, in and out of cars, airplanes, and all around the house. They have worked great up til recently.
One is still fine, but the power connection on the other one has gotten loose. The power cuts out when the cord is moved slightly, but it has even cut out when the player was stable on a flat surface.
Then a few days ago the screen stopped working. It’s just gray. I got online hoping to find some warranty information, but instead found all of these reviews that say I’m not alone in this, and there’s nothing to do but pitch it.
Fortunately, both these problems are on the same unit, and the other one is still going. For now!
***UPDATE*** July 28, 2007. The second DVD player stopped working too (BUT wait!!). It had been in our car for a month, and when we tried to turn it on a few days ago, the screen was just gray. We thought the heat from the closed up car damaged it, or it just went out like our other one.
Last night I fiddled with both of them, hoping something would jar them to work again. I couldn’t bear to throw them away! I even forced the optical laser part back and forth!
I was about to give up when I toggled the A/V in/out switch for gee whiz and the player CAME ON!! I thought it was too good to be true, but it works!
Then I tried the other DVD player, still a gray screen, no spinning sound of the DVD. I held my breath, toggled the A/V switch to “out” and IT WORKED TOO. I can hardly believe it was just a matter of the switch being set to “in” rather than “out!” How dumb can we be?? And I can’t believe I didn’t ruin them by forcing the laser around! And I can’t believe I was *this* close to throwing them away. Here’s hoping they keep working… and I hope this review can “save” someone else’s seemingly broken player from the trash. Check that switch!
***EDIT, added December 8, 2007***
We’ve had these 2 DVD players for almost 2 years now and they are still both working (even after thinking they were both broken!).
Junk!

We were given this for Christmas a few years ago and it only worked for a few months. Then it’d say “no disc” even when a DVD was in place. I called Polaroid’s costumer service this morning and they told me that it isn’t repairable. All they will do is exchange it for a new one, but I have to pay $135 for the exchange. No thanks! It’s a piece of junk.
Great Buy

I have had this DVD player for a long while now. I bought this due to the Polaroid brand name. I’ve heard a lot of good things, especially since new management took over the quality of their product is constantly getting better. Keep up the good work Polaroid!
A hit-and-miss item.

When portable DVD players first hit the two hundred dollar range, I bought two of these. Though I normally stay away from extended warranties, a Best Buy associate convinced me they were a good investment for electronic equipment that would be subject to a lot of movement. I bought four-year extended warranties for both. One player quickly developed a problem with the AC connection in the unit, causing it to turn on and off. Best Buy exchanged it for another Polaroid which stopped functioning after about two years. I replaced that one with a ten-inch Insignia at no cost to me, a fact made possible by a price drop in portable DVD players. From the beginning, my other Polaroid suffered from a screen that was noticeably dimmer than its twin. Despite that, the thing was a solid workhorse. It went to Hawaii twice, sat in my car repeatedly during summer heat, was bounced and jostled quite a bit, and played any burned DVD I put in it. After three years, though, I decided it would be nice to have a portable with a brighter screen for viewing in sunny conditions. I returned the unit to the store and walked out with a larger portable LG. I won’t buy Polaroid again, because I’ve owned three and they either weren’t reliable or the display didn’t function as it should have. Also, the other players have a few features not available on the Polaroid model. You can’t over-charge the batteries. Screens swivel and fold back, a nice feature on a plane. You can unplug the AC cord or disconnect the battery on the LG, and it will still resume play on the scene where you stopped it. The LG also has a battery good for five hours. My own experience and the reviews of others tell me it’s pretty hit-and-miss with this model. Hope this helps some people. Last, let me just say, THANK YOU Best Buy associate wherever you are!
DO NOT BUY POLAROID

I purchased this portable DVD player for our RV. We went on 2 trips and played a total of 10 movies when it no longer would work. The screen turned completely white. The DVD player was 94 days old after we returned from our 2nd trip. 4 days out of warranty – Polaroid said it was not fixable and the best they would offer is a replacement unit – for $50.00! It’s only an $80 DVD player, why would I pay $50.00 when the 1st one only lasted 10 DVD’s. Very unhappy with Polaroid, will never buy another one of their products!!!!!!!!!
Best buy for the $

This my second one. My daughter broke the first one by pushing the screen to far back. I did a good bit of research and believe this one is the best for the money and I have all the extra supplies from the first one.
Don’t be a fool. Buy something else.

Not just one, but two of Polaroids portable DVD players were purchased less than a year ago. Both quit spinning the DVD in the 13th month within a few days of each other. What do you do with a working LCD screen and no player? Nothing. It’s crap. Don’t buy Polaroid!!!
Piece of Junk

I’ve never purchased one of these new – but I did acquire two of them in different estate lot auctions. The first one was in it’s very nice carrying case, but inoperable. Oh well.
The next one does nothing but show the blue Polaroid screen.
I find it odd that I’ve acquired TWO of these exact same units, and neither one functioned at all.
I looked it up – found the reviews here and it is exactly the same as our experience with this waste of a product.
Don’t buy one new or especially used. Just don’t do it.
poor battery placement
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
i received one of these portable dvd players as a prize at work. i was very excited to win, as i had always wanted a portable player for dvd’s. the image quality is good, but after looking at other models (sony & lg) in stores, i’ve realized that the picture is merely acceptable. the speakers are barely audible in a semi noisy environment. with headphone/earphones, the sound quality improves greatly. i’ve never used the remote, i assume that it would work well.
the largest problem i encountered was with the battery attachment. within a few months, the plastic clip that locks the battery in place snapped off. this is a machine that i am very careful with, keeping it in a nice padded targus case. i exchanged the unit for another one. its now about a year later, and the same thing has happened. the battery is locked on at the back and bottom of the player with a tiny spring loaded release clip. for me, this has been a deal breaker when considering a replacement. i’d rather spend double on the sony or lg model, simply because of the better quality picture, sound, and design of the battery attachment.
Great Product

I haven’t had the product long enough to give a thorough review but so far, so good. It has been about three weeks and there is no skipping or dragging. It seems to be a quality product. The sound could be better. But I am very satisfied with this portable DVD player.
