Returned two for a full refund…
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I was very excited when I purchased this portable DvD player for my daughters. I purchased it at Target for a reasonable price. Unfortunatly, after playing only two movies, the screen went completely blank and I was unable to get it to work again. I exchanged it at Target (hoping it was just a dud). However, after watching about 6 movies on the new one, the screen started going blank again. It was very frustrating. Sometimes you could get it to come back on by fiddling with it, but this meant you had to start the movie over and skip back to where you were. I do not reccomend buying this unit. I guess you really do get what you pay for. I’m now doing research and trying to decide which brand is the best….

    Good Enough

If you’re looking for a good DVD player with picture-perfect quality, the Mintek 8″ Portable DVD Player is NOT for you. However, if you want an affordable DVD player that’ll play your DVDs on the road, this player is good enough. The lid on the DVD compartment is loose on the left side, so you have to be careful not to accidentally open it or break it open, and the picture quality has some black specks, but if you adjust the color and brightness, it should go mostly away. In all, get it for price, don’t get it for quality.

Do not buy this model, not worth the money. I have had to return two of these models to costco’s. The first time the player would randomly play the dvd’s and when i tried to fast forward through the dvd it would not. Returned it and got another one. This one after 4 hours of use the screen would go black and would not shut off unless you cut the power. stay away from this model

    Very nice
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This portable DVD is very nice, I bought mine from Costco with an additional carrying case and 2 headphones. And I love it! Picture quality is great, the sound is okay, but with headphones it’s very nice surround sound effect. The only downside is that you have to charge it 6 hours. I don’t agree with another review and they said there was no fastforward or rewind button, but there is more than that, you can skip chapters or skip slow, it even has it for the remote! I had been searching for the right one and this is it, my advice: If your looking for portable DVD player than look into buying this one. Alot of people say they hate the picture and sound quality, and I agree with what another reviewer said, “If your looking for one with good picture and sound quality, buy a regualer DVD player, not a portable one”

how many returns does it take to convince you this is a dud?
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I, too, had to return this twice to Costco — once because a piece snapped off (oh, no, I can never change the battery pack again!) and once because the screen went black. In the second hour of a four hour trip. Just prior to a six hour plane ride. GRRRRRRR.

Thanks, but no thanks, Mintek. And thank god for Costco’s easy-return policy. I had long since lost my (second!) receipt but they took it back anyways for credit. Which I used up buying groceries, since I will NEVER buy any DVD player by Mintek again.

    Product Defect

I plugged the dvd player into my car for the first time and on a four hour trip. It lasted 1-1/2 hours and then the screen went black and it hasn’t worked since. After reading all the other reviews, I think the product is defective.

I gave the product a bad review and it was my fault. I didn’t have it plugged in correctly. That was 18 mos ago? Anyway it works fine. I’d get another one. So Sorry

    Nice Gadget, Great Value!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I finally decided to purchase a portable dvd and chose this. I do a lot of traveling and this is perfect for the plane ride as well as great entertainment for my kids. I got the package with the case and headphones. The value was outstanding. I find that it produced sharp pictures and the sound was good. It is also easy to use like a regular dvd player. The wide screen feature is great and I look forward to watching more. When I first used it, it did not seem sharp becuase the color seemed to spill over the images but when I adjusted the brightness and color, it was sharp. I highly recommend this and this is one of the best values that I have purchased.

I just purchased this as a replacement for the one I bought in April 04, I had the 7 inch screen which just went bad on me, just a total black screen, I heard audio but no video so luckily I found my receipt and Costco returned it. But now after reading these reviews I will not open this new one and return it. thanks.

PLayed on DVD before it died
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Our Mintek MDP-1810 portable DVD player played one DVD before it died. The motor started making strange rubbing noises, and the display started blinking.

The one DVD it managed to play sure looked good — the picture was sharp, and contrast and color were terrific. I just wish it still worked. Its replacement will come from a more reputable manufacturer.

Unless you like to gamble; please read the reviews first!
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I admit, the picture quality of the MDP-1810 is great, atleast when it is working. I had to return two of these units to Costco. The first one had a faulty d.c. adapter. The second one played one DVD perfectly fine until it stopped working. I exchanged for yet a third one, which is having problems playing discs containing .mp3 files. After reading the reviews, I am definately returning this thing and avoiding Mintek products like the plague!

    Don’t buy it!
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I bought this dvd player for my husband. It didn’t seem to work at first the screen was always black. After that problem got fixed it froze in the middle of moovies. On rare occasions it works through out a moovie but most of the time freezes or the screen goes black. I would not recommend this to anyone.

Has worked great for over a year
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I don’t know what happened with some of the other reviewers, but my Mintek MDP-1810 has worked great for well over a year and through 2 young children. We have taken it overseas, on flights, used at home during power outages and it is still going strong. Great picture quality and a tough little machine.

    Can you say “JUNK”?
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
If anyone provided a review for this item right after playing it the first time, they would have written a glowing review. So would I. But I have only used it ONE time for a plane trip. When I just took it out of the case for the second time, the thing will not play. When you insert a disc, it just makes this awful noise and then says “no disc found”. Regardless of what dvd is inserted, the machine does not work. It was used not more than 6 hours tops. What a piece of trash it is.

Disposable DVD Player – Decent quality while it lasts…
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I purchased this in August 2004 for my daughter during long plane/car trips. It worked well and went through a lot of use until it recently gave out (Jan 2006). Although I don’t consider that necessarily good quality, if you get a good deal and buy it from a store (such as CostCo) which has a liberal return policy you can probably end up with a decent player that will last you 1-3 years or so, even if you have to return one if it fails during the initial burn-in period.

    You can do better
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Had I read the reviews here initially, I would have looked for another brand. I bought my first 1810 unit at Cosco and within three months, my case started breaking and Cosco readily replaced the unit. I had the other unit for a little over a year and it’s no longer workimg. On both units, I would sometimes have difficulties as other reviewers have reported and I would keep trying and it would generally start to work. I thought at first the DVD discs were defective and replaced one. Then I thought it was a dirty disc and would insure the disc was clean. Then I thought it was the unit needed to be perfectly level and then I thought it was that my laser needed cleaning, so, I bought a cleaner and used it. The really frustrating aspect of the whole problem was that each solution seemed to work for a while. Even though I had to start a DVD allover again to get back to where I was when a freez-up began, or if it took 20 minutes for the unit to work, I persevered. When it finally malfunctioned enough to totally exasperate me, I emailed the Mintec company for technical suggestions and never heard from them. So, it is a hit or miss proposition as to whether you will get a dependable unit and the functional ife of the unit is highly varable and the technical support is not supportive. In short, even though some reviewers are sastisfied, for the same money, you can do better.

Looks Good on the Outside But…
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I actually got this player through a rewards program. Perhaps the QC technicians were on brake when my unit was on the line. It is poorly made. It worked OK at first but after the 5th time of using it, the picture went out; just white and black lines appeared. I had to tap it on the back of the screen to make the picture come back. To this day I have to do this. One of these days its just going to stop working all together I suspect. I have to be careful how I tilt the screen. If its not just right, the display will go out; black and white wavy lines.

Please, do yourself a favor. Pick something else out of the rewards catalog.

Misleading ad. Rude response from “smith” Amazon is the only reason I did business with “smith” When I complained about quality to “smith” I received numerous nasty emails. Amazon and ‘smith’ will not have me as a customer.
