Back on the road…
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
After a long time searching car dvd player to replace my broken one, … I Could’t find any with the price and the quality I wanted. Most of them price more than $500.00 for 10″ screen. Then I found this 10.4 inch clarion dvd player refurbish with this little price at amazon, but the review was not encouraging. But then I took my chance. Spend $70 for the installation, and now my kids enjoy their ride again after their long break. I found no problem with this refurbish product and very satisfied with overall quality, design and price. It’s really help to keep my kid occupied with this product. The manufacture, clarion , also provide 90 days warranty for this refurbish product.. very happy !!!
Great player!

I have seen reviews that expressed concerns about problems with the refurbished player but it turned out that I have made a good investment getting a refurbished 10 inch player for the price of the 8 inch player new. I’m very pleased with the player and hope that my kid will enjoy it for a long time from now.
Good investment with limits

This product was shipped and packaged nicely. All parts were there and it feels like a quality product. Installation instructions were incomplete but with some trial and error learning -mainly with the wires..- installed in a couple hours. The screws that came with it would not hold in the headliner so I used some small nuts and bolts to secure the bracket. the rubber gasket was a little too small so in order for it to fit I had to cut the gasket; not a big deal.
This monitor/player does not have speakers built in and no FM Modulator so wireless headphones are pretty much the only option, unless you want to route wires behind headliner etc. from the a/v in/out jack underneath the player. Screen does not swivel. My kids love the player. I would have loved player speakers in case batteries in headphones run out and the option of having the sound come from the car speakers. Overall it seems like a quality product for relatively little money, but without some options that other players do have.
Great price on a DVD player!

I recently bought a used minivan. The DVD player wasn’t working- replacements are upwards of $800 at the dealership!?!?! Looked around and even cheaper DVD players are more than double what I paid for this (refurbished) unit.
I searched around and found this GEM, and after using it a couple times, am Very Impressed.
-Picture quality is great!
-Headphones seem comfortable, and work anywhere you can see the screen.
-Installation was fairly simple, using a metal plate and pre-run power cables already in my van from the previous install. The screws that came with the unit are perfect- they are self-drilling through metal. (DON’T just screw it into the roof though!!!) The wiring is plenty long and high-quality, with shrink-wrap even! (Just use a HOT hair dryer once everything is installed.)
-Plenty of video options. There are 2 A/V in and 1 A/V out- including a cable long enough to run down into even the biggest van/SUV for a game system, vcr, satellite TV, whatever. You could use ANOTHER A/V cable and have two different sources!
-It plays MPEG, WMV, and SOME AVI movies on burnt CDs and DVDs.!!!!!
-Packaging was very very professional, the unit looked brand new.
Possible CONS-
-No instruction manual in the box. It was very hard to find on the Clarion website, search never found the model number. Look under 2007 products- [...]
-No RF modulator, needed for playing the audio on the Car’s stereo system. -But it comes with 2 pair of headphones. -But do kids want to wear rather large headphones for a Long time?
-No regular headphone jack for other headphones. (You can buy more IR headphones on ebay, amazon, etc…)
-No A/V jack. It’s all wiring on the “top” (as mounted) of the unit. So you either have cables hanging or have to install them to somewhere.
-90 day warranty.
I rate the unit 5/5 based on the price and features.
Been Through 3 of these Units – Not One Works!

I’ve never shied away from buying refurbished products. Nine times out of ten, they are simple “customer didn’t want it” types. Well, I’ve learned a lesson with these Clarion overhead dvd players. After cutting the hole in the headliner, discovered the first unit was shipped with the incorrect power and input pigtails. I ordered a replacement from Amazon. Upon arrival, took the pigtails from the new unit, connected it to the old one and installed it. Pressed the button to release the monitor to try it out and sure enough it doesn’t open. Unfortunately, I can’t have my kids pry it open with a Swiss Army knife everytime they want to watch a movie. So I dropped the broken one and installed the replacement unit, of course checking if the screen dropped first! Packed the broken unit up and gave it to UPS to send back to Amazon. The unit fired up no problem – tested it out with a brand new Dora DVD from the wrapper and within 5 minutes, the screen and sound froze. Ok.. Tried another movie – this time, it froze in three minutes. Ordered another replacement and installed it. This time, Dora didn’t make it through the previews without freezing. So much for this experiment gone wrong!
While the items were packed nicely, each component – the main unit, headphones and even pigtails all looked very ragged – scratched, dirty, fingerprints all over the screens, etc. All units were manufactured sometime in 2007.
Needless to say, I’ll need to go in a different direction with a reliable unit that will cover up the big hole that is now part of my headliner.
Amazon has been great in with the logisitics (shipping and returning) but their best customer service would be to stop selling this product.
